Wolves vs Man United : first Monday Night Football fixture of the season and it promises to be a thrilling encounter

TEAM NEWS

Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers travelled to Armenia for a Europa League qualifying clash midweek, but don’t expect the long journey to damage their chances too much.

They fielded a much-changed squad for the comfortable 4-0 win over Pyunik on Thursday, with full debuts for Pedro Neto — who scored — Patrick Cutrone, young defender Max Kilman, and Real Madrid loan signing Jesus Vallejo.

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo will likely return to the starting XI that drew against Leicester last weekend, but a balanced rotation policy will be crucial to Wolves’ success in the coming fortnight as they contend with a packed fixture list.

The United clash will be the first of five matches in 14 days for Wolves, as they undertake their first European campaign since 1981.

Predicted team (3-5-2): Patricio; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Castro, Moutinho, Neves, Dendoncker, Doherty; Jota, Jimenez

Man Utd

Considering how impressive almost every United player was in last week’s drubbing of Chelsea, it would surprise if coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes wholesale changes.

Eric Bailly remains out with a long-term knee injury, while Alexis Sanchez is highly unlikely to feature as he continues building towards match fitness — Solskjaer has said he is ‘a few weeks behind’ his other players, but ‘very close’.

Daniel James scored on his debut after coming off the bench against Chelsea, but it is unlikely he’ll be able to overtake Lingard for a spot on the right wing.

There has been some discussion over whether Solskjaer will look to reinforce his midfield given the organised and hardworking midfield Wolves possess, with Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic potential starting options.

But Matic was outplayed and outpaced by Wolves in recent meetings, and we see Scott McTominay retaining his position beside Pogba in the base of the midfield.

Predicted team (4-2-3-1-): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; McTominay, Pogba; Lingard, Pereira, Martial; Rashford

Manchester United face Wolves in the first Monday Night Football fixture of the season and it promises to be a thrilling encounter.

The Red Devils travel to Molineux on the back of a convincing 4-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his side continue their good start to the campaign with a win over the Midlands outfit.

Meanwhile, Wolves claimed a hard-fought point at Leicester last week and they will be keen to get their first three points of the campaign.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men will take encouragement from their record against the Red Devils last season, having totted up consecutive home victories over Solskjaer’s men in the Premier League and FA Cup.

  • Wolves lost none of their three games against Manchester United in all competitions last season (W2 D1 L0), winning both of their games at Molineux.
  • Wolves are unbeaten in eight Premier League home games (W6 D2), a run which includes a victory over Manchester United. Wolves are looking to win three consecutive top-flight games at Molineux for the first time since November 1980.
  • Manchester United are winless in their last four Premier League away games (D1 L3). They last had a longer such run on the road between April-November 2014 (seven games under David Moyes, Ryan Giggs and Louis van Gaal).
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjær has lost all three of his games against Wolves in all competitions - as well as two defeats with Man Utd last season, he lost with Cardiff City in August 2014.
  • Wolves' Raul Jiménez was involved in seven Premier League goals against 'big six' sides last season (4 goals, 3 assists). Only Sergio Aguero (9) and Raheem Sterling (8) were involved in more.
  • Anthony Martial has scored 49 goals for Manchester United in all competitions, more than any other player at the club in that time. He could become the 53rd player to reach a half-century for the club.
